Homeless to Hire: A Pathway from the Streets to Stable Ground

A workforce development initiative transforming lives through meaningful employment at local horse barns and ranches in South Houston’s Third Ward. Created through a powerful partnership between the Black Cowboy Coalition, faith-based organizations, and reentry programs to provide purpose, income, and mentorship to those experiencing homelessness.

The Challenge & Our Solution

A community-based approach connecting access to work, dignity, and stability through supported agricultural and land-based opportunities

Barriers to Employment

  • Criminal backgrounds limiting options
  • No permanent address for applications
  • Limited access to hygiene & transportation
  • Disconnection from support networks

Our Approach

Creating a bridge between homeless individuals seeking work and ranch owners needing reliable help, all within a supportive community environment.

Pilot program features carefully selected participants, supervised ranch work, transportation support, and fair compensation.

Growth Pathway

Pilot with a small group of participants initially.

The program then expands to additional individuals across multiple sites as capacity and partnerships grow.

Graduates can become peer mentors and trainers in our Leadership & Livestock Stewardship Program.
